In Verona, a newly opened restaurant is enticing diners with a complimentary bottle of wine if they agree to put away their phones during their meal.
Al Condominio, located in northern Italy’s picturesque city of Verona, is promoting a ‘digital detox’ experience by offering diners a bottle of quality wine in exchange for temporarily surrendering their mobile phones. Diners can have their phones securely stored in a drawer by restaurant staff for the duration of their visit.
The offer provides one bottle of wine per couple, or one bottle for every four people in larger groups, as detailed on the restaurant’s website.
Angelo Lella, co-founder of Al Condominio, explained the motivation behind the initiative: “We wanted to present something fresh and engaging, focusing on a unique gastronomic and social experience. The #DigitalDetox concept allows diners to truly savor their time at the table without the distractions of technology.”
Lella further emphasized, “In today’s world, where time is incredibly valuable, the opportunity to disconnect from technology and enjoy a good glass of wine with friends, loved ones, or new acquaintances is a luxury.”
The concept has resonated with diners, some of whom have traveled from across Italy to experience the restaurant’s innovative approach. Al Condominio draws inspiration from the communal dining traditions of old Veronese condominiums, where neighbors enjoyed shared meals and built strong connections.
The restaurant’s menu reflects this theme, with dishes named after fictional residents like ‘the gardener,’ ‘the ones from the first floor,’ and ‘the spy,’ creating a nostalgic nod to the past.
While some top restaurants have traditionally enforced strict no-phone policies, recent shifts in attitudes reflect the influence of social media and the desire for diners to capture their culinary experiences. A 2018 study published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology found that phone use during meals can detract from the enjoyment and connection experienced with others at the table.
Al Condominio’s approach offers a refreshing take, inviting guests to embrace the luxury of undistracted dining while enjoying a fine bottle of wine.
